RAG vs Memory Layer vs Vector DB: Which Does Your Agent Need?

If your coding agent forgets your preferences, that’s not a RAG problem — it’s a memory problem. RAG retrieves documents to answer a question now. A memory layer persists facts across sessions so Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode remember you next week. A vector DB is the DIY building block for either. Here’s when to use each — and when to combine them.

What each does

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) — At query time, fetch relevant chunks (docs, code, tickets) and inject them into the prompt to ground the answer. Great for “what does this repo do?” Stateless — it doesn’t remember you.

Memory layer — Extracts facts from conversations (“I prefer dark mode and use VS Code,” “we use bun not npm”), stores them as vector + structured memory, and recalls them on future searches. Persistent, user- and project-scoped. That’s Audaxic Memory.

Vector DB (Qdrant, Pinecone, ChromaDB) — Infrastructure. Stores vectors and runs similarity search. You still need to build extraction, ranking, dedup, permissions, and API. It’s the engine, not the car.

When to use which (coding-agent lens)

Use RAG when…

Use a memory layer when…

Use a vector DB when…

The winning combo: RAG for codebase + memory layer for user. Your agent does two searches: search RAG for “auth flow” and search Audaxic for “user preferences”, then merges. That’s how Claude Code stays both grounded and personalized. See mem0 alternative and Mem0 vs SuperMemory vs Zep for pricing.

How Audaxic fits

Audaxic is a managed memory layer purpose-built for coding agents:

Try: curl -X POST https://api.memory.audaxic.com/add -H "Authorization: Bearer ak_..." -d '{"messages":["I use bun and dark mode"]}' then /search {"query":"user preferences"}. Or install plugins: npx @audaxic/memory-claude install. Docs: quickstart.

TL;DR — decision tree

  1. Need to remember the user? → Memory layer (Audaxic).
  2. Need to answer about current docs/code? → RAG.
  3. Need both? → Combine (RAG for docs + memory for preferences).
  4. Want to build it yourself? → Vector DB + extraction + API. Otherwise use managed.
